We had our big benefit concert last weekend and collected a truck full of toys to donate to Toys for Tots. This morning, the Chipmunk and I took them in to the drop box. I was so proud of him... He helped to load the truck and did more than his part to help unload when we got there.
Carrying in the toys!
Fighting cats, hyper dogs, lots of music, and learning along with the human hurricane.

Messy clean science
We had a whole day of science experiments the other day and had a whole lot of fun!
First we decided to see what happens when to put a bar of soap in the microwave. The water in the soap heats up and turns to vapor and the heated air expands till it looks like this.
It was fun to look for a air in the soap and see what it felt like... and of course, it was fun to throw!!
After that, we talked about reactions and how sometimes two things can come together to make something totally new and different. He made a hypothesis (an idea you can test, of course!) about what would happen when we put colored vinegar into baking soda. He remembered from last time that it would bubble and it sure did!
Of course everything is more fun if you get your hands in it :)
Later on, he wanted to add the soap to his concoction, so we made another guess about what would happen and dove right in.
Hooray for a clean mess!

Bowling
We love any game where we can knock things over!
On a walk last week, we found some baseball sized black walnuts and brought them home to play with and investigate. Turns out that they're great for bowling!
We used painters tape on the floor so that he could set the pins up by himself.

We took advantage of the gorgeous weather last week to go visit the zoo with some friends. It's one of our favorite ways to spend the morning...we have our favorites, but we always see and learn something new as well!
Our friends the flamingos are right by the entrance, so we have to stop and see them three or four times each trip. This time, we talked about how they eat by turning their heads upside down in the water and filtering out the food they need.
It was cool out, so the elephants were really active. It's hard to imagine how they get enough food when they're constantly moving!
We always love the petting zoo. These goats were pretty happy to see us too.
A ride on the train is essential, of course. J has the best smile!
giggles!!
First you walk over here...
AND THEN YOU JUMP!

Theremins and Moogs and Llamas, oh my!
More catching up...it's been an eventful couple of weeks!
We spent a wonderful weekend in Asheville recently. It was perfect timing for the fall colors and such beautiful weather. It was definitely a weekend of opposites - Friday we went to the Southeastern Animal Fiber Festival and saw llamas, alpacas, goats, and enough yarn to keep me happy for quite a while. The Chipmunk tried (and nearly succeeded several times) to dive head first into huge bags of wool and begged for an alpaca to take home :)
Here he is trying to spin yarn in the hotel room.
Most of the day Saturday was spent downtown at the Moogfest. Ed went to a bunch of concerts over the weekend while the kiddo and I hung out at the hotel room, but we got to go play during the day, of course!
Baby's first Moog
He's a natural!
Leave me alone, Mom. Can't you see I'm working here?
Outside the Moog Factory
And a family portrait (Thanks Mark!)

The 40th Annual Stone Mountain Highland Games
This Scottish festival has always been an important part of my family life. I've been to nearly every one of them during my life. It means a lot to me that the Chipmunk can participate too....and that he loves it so much!
Here's our Wild Highlander!
What's not to love about a weekend in the woods surrounded by music and friends?
He helped with mic checks
Made new friends
Ran wild in the woods
And upstaged Mama at every opportunity!

Catching Up
A few Fridays ago, we had planned for Daddy to take a half day so that we could go to the pumpkin patch locally and get packed up and ready for a big weekend. Well, it turned out that Daddy had different ideas and two hours later, we were at a HUGE pumpkin patch a little north of us.
It was totally worth it :)
There were hay rides,
Talking pumpkins,
MILES to run,
And wheelbarrows to ride in!
We brought home pumpkins in all sorts of colors:
And just had an all around fabulous day!!
